Fluorosurfactants for firefighting foam development
Compare amphoteric foam ingredients by composition, concentration and documented surface tension, then qualify the complete foam formulation.
These materials are ingredients for developing firefighting foam concentrates. The catalog includes candidates for aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), film-forming fluoroprotein foam (FFFP) and alcohol-resistant systems. Raw-material selection should begin with the intended concentrate platform, fuel exposure, water supply and finished-agent qualification requirements.
VN-FL-1003 identifies 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine and lists 27% solids. VN-FL-1004 lists 25% solids and targets alcohol-resistant foam. VN-FL-1005 and VN-FL-1013 list 27% solids, while VN-FL-1012 lists 35%. VN-FL-1014 uses the different term active content, listed at 30%. All six are described as amphoteric.
What to check when selecting
- Define the intended foam type and fuel class before comparing surfactants. Include the required use dilution and application equipment in the project brief.
- Keep active content and total solids separate when calculating a formulation; verify analytical definitions for the supplied material.
- Compare surface tension at the same solution concentration and confirm water quality, temperature and method.
- Evaluate compatibility with the complete concentrate, including the other surfactants, polymers or protein components relevant to the platform.
- Plan the finished-foam tests and destination-market composition review alongside raw-material screening, rather than inferring qualification from a product name.
What the numerical differences can tell you
At the listed 0.1% solution concentration, VN-FL-1005 reports 16.0 dyne/cm and VN-FL-1013 reports 19.0 dyne/cm despite both listing 27% solids. Their 0.2% entries are 15.0 and 18.0 dyne/cm. This provides a screening distinction, but does not establish a ranking for extinguishment, drainage or burnback performance in a finished foam.
VN-FL-1012 lists pH 8.5 and surface tension 17.5 dyne/cm at 0.1%; VN-FL-1014 lists pH 8 and 16.80 dyne/cm at 0.1%. The latter also provides values at 0.01% and 0.05%. VN-FL-1004 does not provide a surface-tension value, so its alcohol-resistant concentrate route should be compared using relevant formulation results and viscosity behavior.
Design a controlled formulation evaluation
Record the complete concentrate recipe, batch procedure, water quality and test dilution. Start by assessing mixing, appearance, concentrate viscosity and storage behavior. Then characterize foam formation, expansion and drainage using the relevant equipment and method. Keep the raw-material lot and formulation version linked to every result so differences can be investigated.
For the intended fuel and use conditions, qualified testing of the complete agent must establish extinguishment and burnback behavior under the applicable standard. If storage produces haze, separation or viscosity drift, investigate ingredient compatibility and the preparation sequence. If laboratory foam properties change with water quality, repeat the comparison with the specified water supply before changing the surfactant level.

View product detailsSelection questions
Does low surface tension prove a certified firefighting foam?
No. It is a raw-material screening parameter. Certification or acceptance applies to the documented complete agent, test conditions and intended use.
Are solids and active content interchangeable?
Not automatically. VN-FL-1014 explicitly lists active content, while neighboring grades use solids. Confirm the analytical basis before normalizing the formulation.
Is there one universal dosage for these six ingredients?
The current product data do not establish a common formulation dosage or finished-agent use dilution. These must come from the specific formulation development and qualification.
What should a technical enquiry include?
Provide foam platform, intended fuels, concentrate and use-dilution requirements, water supply, equipment, target standard and composition restrictions for the destination market. Request current grade documentation and a sample for controlled evaluation.
