Water repellents for masonry, gypsum and coatings
Select siliconates, silane–siloxane concentrates or emulsions by substrate and process; evaluate water uptake, appearance and coating compatibility.
Choose a water-repellent route from the substrate and the point of incorporation. A surface treatment for porous masonry, an additive mixed into gypsum and a silicone resin emulsion used in a coating have different distribution and compatibility requirements. An attractive water bead on one surface is a useful observation, but does not establish lower bulk absorption or resistance under every exposure condition.
VECNORA offers siliconates, silane–siloxane concentrates, hydrophobic resin products and emulsions, plus a hydrogen-functional gypsum grade. Begin with the intended substrate, moisture condition, existing finish and application process. The objective is to reduce the relevant water uptake while retaining acceptable appearance, processing behavior and any subsequent paint or bonding performance.
What to check when selecting
- Distinguish surface impregnation from in-mix addition; confirm where the treatment must be distributed to work.
- Record porosity, moisture and surface contamination, and retain an untreated specimen from the same substrate batch.
- Compare capillary or bulk water uptake using a documented conditioning and exposure method appropriate to the application.
- Inspect whitening, residue, color change and uneven absorption on representative visible areas before expanding the trial.
- For coating or gypsum additions, examine dispersion, process stability and the properties of the complete cured material, not the additive alone.
Different chemical routes need different handling
VN-SI-1144 is potassium methyl siliconate in water, with listed solids of approximately 52% and pH of approximately 13 at 25°C. Its description identifies reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide and a potassium carbonate by-product. Evaluate surface residue and color carefully; do not assume that an aqueous product is neutral or transfer its dilution procedure to a different siliconate.
VN-SI-1148 lists approximately 50% active content as a silicone emulsion; VN-SI-1155 is a silicone resin emulsion with 50% active content and 1000 cSt at 25°C. The similar concentration does not mean identical chemistry or film behavior. VN-SI-1154 instead lists 100% active content, 15–25 mm²/s at 25°C and hydrogen content above 1.58 wt.%; its reactive identity needs separate handling and compatibility review.
Evaluate durability and appearance together
Prepare comparable specimens with controlled application and curing or conditioning history. Record material uptake as well as the supplied-product amount. After initial evaluation, repeat the relevant water exposure and inspect the surface again. This reveals whether uneven penetration, incomplete reaction or a surface deposit is dominating the result rather than the intended hydrophobic treatment.
If water beads but the specimen still gains substantial mass, investigate untreated edges, cracks and bulk absorption. If a treated surface whitens, review concentration, absorption and residue rather than adding another coat automatically. For an internally modified gypsum mix, monitor mixing and setting behavior alongside water uptake. If later painting is required, test the complete coating system on the treated substrate before approval.

View product detailsSelection questions
Does water beading prove waterproofing?
No. Surface beading and water penetration are different observations. Select a water-uptake or exposure test relevant to the construction or coating application.
Can all concentrates use the same dilution ratio?
No. Chemistry, active content, solvent or water carrier and substrate absorption differ. Confirm the current grade instructions before trial.
What information supports water-repellent selection?
Provide substrate type and condition, surface or in-mix addition, required appearance, water exposure and any later coating or bonding operation. For gypsum, include mixing and setting requirements.
