Applications
Start with the surface, formulation and process you need to work with. Explore four application areas, compare relevant materials and identify the conditions to check in your own formulation.
Coatings & surface treatment
Wetting, leveling and surface feel address different parts of coating performance. Select additives around the binder, carrier and substrate, then assess the complete film through drying and any subsequent coating operation.
What to consider
- Confirm the binder, water or solvent balance, substrate and addition sequence before comparing surface additives.
- Evaluate wetting, leveling, slip and foam separately; include craters, clarity and intercoat adhesion in the drawdown review.
- Compare supplied concentration and carrier composition when planning trials; use the current grade guidance for the addition level.
Textiles & leather
Fiber finishing, leather surface treatment and foam control in processing baths call for different silicone functions. Match the material to the substrate and treatment stage, with attention to bath stability, deposition and the finished surface.
What to consider
- Record fiber or leather type, bath pH, ionic character, temperature and the intended padding, exhaustion or coating process.
- Check dilution and bath stability with the actual auxiliaries; assess handle, appearance and absorbency on representative substrates.
- For foam control, observe both foam knockdown and continued suppression under process agitation, then check for deposits or surface defects.
Inks & printing
Ink additives influence how the formulation flows, wets the substrate and behaves after drying. Consider surface control and rheology together with the printing process, especially where the printed layer must later be coated, bonded or handled.
What to consider
- Define the ink vehicle, pigment system, substrate and printing or curing conditions before selecting additives.
- Assess spreading, surface slip and blocking separately, while checking print appearance and adhesion after drying.
- For fumed silica, compare surface treatment and dispersion conditions; review viscosity recovery, settling and print transfer in the full ink.
Automotive care
Automotive care formulations may target gloss, surface feel or water repellency on paint and other exterior surfaces. Compare silicone emulsions by chemistry and supplied form, then evaluate the finished formulation on the intended surface and with the actual application method.
What to consider
- Identify the exact surface and use method; paint, glass, rubber and trim require separate compatibility checks.
- Compare emulsion ionic character, silicone content and dilution stability in the complete formulation, including cleaners or other surfactants.
- Evaluate gloss, streaking, residue and water response before and after relevant washing; for glass treatments, include clarity and visibility.
