Fumed silica and silicone masterbatch: two formulation routes

Distinguish powder dispersion and rheology from polymer-carried silicone processing aids. Select silica surface chemistry or a compatible masterbatch carrier.

Fumed silica and silicone masterbatch belong in different formulation decisions. Fumed silica is a particulate material evaluated for dispersion, rheology and reinforcement in the selected matrix. Silicone masterbatch introduces silicone through a polymer carrier, typically as pellets, for development of polymer processing or surface behavior. They are not interchangeable solutions to a generic “flow problem.”

First identify whether the target is liquid anti-sag, suspension or elastomer reinforcement, or instead extrusion, molding and the surface properties of a thermoplastic compound. This distinction determines the incorporation equipment and the measurements that matter. The VECNORA range contains hydrophilic and surface-treated silica grades alongside TPU-, PA6-, PP- and LDPE-carried silicone masterbatches.

What to check when selecting

  • For silica, identify matrix polarity, surface treatment and the desired balance between low-shear structure and workable processing viscosity.
  • Keep powder incorporation order, mixing energy and dispersion time controlled; compare agglomerates and recovery after shear.
  • For masterbatch, match the carrier to the base polymer and verify drying or moisture-control requirements before blending.
  • Measure processing and finished-surface outcomes separately: torque or die buildup does not replace scratch, friction or bonding evaluation.
  • Retain the complete filler, pigment and additive package in the comparison; neither material can be qualified independently of the host formulation.

Silica: surface treatment matters alongside BET area

VN-SI-1098 is PDMS-treated hydrophobic fumed silica with a typical BET surface area of 110 ± 30 m²/g. VN-SI-1103 is hydrophilic silica with a typical BET value of 150 ± 15 m²/g. This is a chemistry-and-surface-area comparison, not proof that one delivers stronger thickening in every binder. A shared silica CAS number does not remove the surface-treatment distinction.

For a sagging coating, compare low-shear structure, application flow and recovery after a controlled dispersion step. For a clear resin, examine haze and visible agglomerates at the intended film thickness. For an elastomer, measure reinforcement alongside mixing and processing viscosity. If results vary between batches, review incorporation energy and dispersion before attributing the difference entirely to the silica grade.

Masterbatch: select the carrier before the silicone percentage

The listed masterbatches all contain 50% siloxane, but their carriers differ: VN-SI-1164 uses TPU, VN-SI-1165 PA6, VN-SI-1166 PP, and VN-SI-1167 plus VN-SI-1168 LDPE. VN-SI-1167 is positioned for cable compounds, whereas VN-SI-1168 has broader plastics-processing positioning. Equal silicone content or a shared LDPE carrier does not establish identical dispersion or equivalent finished-part performance.

In an extrusion trial, record moisture preparation, screw conditions, torque, throughput, die buildup and surface quality at comparable settings. For glass-fiber-filled polyamide, include exposed fibers and warpage; for visible parts, inspect scratch whitening and finish after conditioning. If processing improves but printing or bonding worsens, evaluate the complete downstream operation. Cable compounds also need their finished-cable requirements assessed independently of any processing improvement.

Selection questions

Can silicone masterbatch replace fumed silica for anti-sag?

Not as a direct substitution. The powder rheology route and polymer-carried silicone route serve different formulation and processing functions.

Is higher BET surface area always better?

No. Surface treatment, matrix polarity and dispersion influence the result. Compare the required rheology, clarity or reinforcement at controlled processing conditions.

What details should a selection enquiry include?

For silica, provide the resin or liquid phase, dispersion equipment and target rheology or reinforcement. For masterbatch, provide the base polymer, filler package, machine process and surface or processing failure being addressed.
